3 Clues to Identify False Teachers

By Michael A. Youssef, Ph.D.

Read Jude 1:8-11.

Jude knew all about the spiritual destruction that false teachers can leave in their wake. For, if their influence is left unchecked, they will pollute the church’s witness, undermine the authority of the Bible in people’s lives, and create a cult of personality that distracts people from following Christ. Jude calls them “dreamers” (Jude 1:8)—they dream of their own glory, subtly denying the true Gospel.

Because these apostates deftly blend into the church body, we need help to recognize them so that we are not taken in by their treachery. Thankfully, Jude gives us three clues to look for—each one connected to a familiar Old Testament story.

First, Jude tells us these false teachers “have taken the way of Cain” (v. 11). In Genesis 4, Cain and Abel both brought offerings to the Lord. Cain, however, chose his way over God’s way—just like false teachers who twist the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Next, Jude says they have “rushed for profit into Balaam’s error” (v. 11). You may recall from the book of Numbers that Balaam, the pagan seer, agreed to curse the people of Israel in exchange for money. He knew it was useless to pronounce destruction against a people that God had blessed, but he chose to follow his feelings, refusing to submit to Truth. Down through the ages, apostate teachers have chosen this same road.

Finally, Jude tells us that false teachers “have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion” (v. 11). Korah was a Levite and Moses’ cousin. He sought to replace Moses as the leader of Israel, driven by ego rather than a desire to serve the Lord. So, when Moses went on his face before God, the earth opened up and swallowed Korah, his family, and all who rebelled. Ego-driven leadership is destructive and doomed.

Ultimately, Jude gives us these examples from Scripture to indicate the independent and rebellious attitude of apostates. False teachers dream of salvation without a Savior, redemption without the cross, and peace without repentance. They preach happiness without holiness and unity without Christ. But our victory is sure under the cover of our Savior, and He has equipped us to recognize false teaching and push back against deception—for the glory of His name.

Prayer: Lord, may I be alert to the schemes of the enemy and bold to confront false teaching in my midst out of zeal for Your name. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

“In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings” (Jude 1:8).
